During each trial, a clock hand revolved around an image, which could be a face with a happy or unhappy expression, or another conceptual image. Participants stopped the revolving hand at their chosen moment.

Their decision on when to stop the hand determined their reward, which ranged between 0 and 150 points. This setup simulated real-life decision-making scenarios.

To create uncertainty, the payoff for different alternatives was inconsistent and varied based on the timing of the decision. In some sessions, the researchers rewarded participants who waited longer, while in other sessions, those who responded more quickly received higher rewards. This variation aimed to replicate the unpredictable nature of real-world decisions and how timing can impact outcomes.

The experiment was planned to better represent decisions in real life.
