Exploring Boredom: A Clinical Perspective on Its Cognitive Characteristics

We are exploring all acquainted with the feeling of boredom. We have felt bored in different contexts and times. In this article we are going to talk about boredom from a clinical perspective. Boredom is a common experience prevalent in neurological and psychiatric populations. In spite of the above mentioned fact, its cognitive characteristics remain poorly understood.

A group of psychologists from the University of Waterloo have examined the relationship between boredom proneness, sustained attention, and the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. Additionally, they explored how these factors interact.

The study results showed that high boredom-prone individuals (HBP) performed poorly on sustained attention measures and exhibited increased ADHD and depression symptoms.

The results also revealed that HBP individuals either show apathy—being unconcerned or aloof from their environment—or experience agitation, where they feel motivated to engage in meaningful activities but often fail to find satisfaction.

Exploring apathetic boredom proneness revealed a strong association with attention lapses. On the other hand, agitated boredom proneness linked to a decreased sensitivity to errors.
