The study, conducted by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and the Biomedical Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, reveals an alarming link between eating disorders and physical health issues.

Researchers examined 7,403 adult UK data sets. The study asked respondents about twenty medical conditions, including cancer, diabetes, migraines, vision problems, digestive troubles, and heart problems. Influential factors considered were smoking, alcoholism, sleeplessness, obesity, perceived stress, and underweight.

The study found 6.4% may have eating disorders, with these individuals 2.11 times more likely to have multimorbidity.

Anxiety primarily influenced the connection between physical multimorbidity and eating disorders. Depression, perceived stress, and insomnia were also significant factors.
Prior studies have demonstrated the substantial financial impact that multimorbidity has on healthcare services, such as hospital stays, primary care, dental care, and care transfer expenses. About 42.4% of people worldwide suffer from multimorbidity.

Lead author Lee Smith, a professor of public health at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), stated, “We believe this is the first study to investigate the association between eating disorder symptoms and physical multimorbidity and to quantify how various influencing factors explain this association. Moreover, this research sheds new light on the complex interplay between mental and physical health.”

Furthermore, by addressing contributing factors, this research may help create strategies to lower multimorbidity in individuals with eating disorders.
